Garden Granted a Boost

Newstead Community Garden has been given a welcome boost in the form of a Mount Alexander Shire Community Grant of $4920. These funds, to conduct workshops and further develop the garden layout, have already been put to good use and the garden is almost ready for planting.

The next step is the allocation of plots so now is the time to decide if you would like to have a plot of your own, share a space with friends or join in communal activities. Membership for plotholders will cost $35 per year and 'Digger' memberships, for those who would like to be involved in the communal areas, will be $15. Businesses, individuals or community groups can also support the garden by paying $30 to sponsor a tree.

Members will benefit from discounted rates for seed, biodynamic preparations, seedlings and bulk purchase of mulch and other garden products. There will also be access to our propagating greenhouse. Plotholders and Digger members will be asked to attend at least one working bee or clean up day each year.

It is intended that the garden will showcase organic food production, drought tolerant species, mulching and water management techniques, composting, worm farms and recycling. We hope it will be a pleasant place incorporating food, flowers, art and sculpture where people can gather, learn from each other, try new things and have a good time.

We welcome anyone to apply for a plot. Perhaps you need the access to water, maybe you live out of town and have time to fill while waiting for school buses or the kids activities, or you might just like to meet people. To register your interest in having a plot or being a Digger leave your name and contact details with Liz Bell at The Red Store by April 30th.
