A cheque to the value of $384.15 was presented to the Echo Editorial Committee by Newstead RTC. This was the money raised through the May Pumpkin Weight Competition that had the whole town guessing.

Bill Tangey, the father of the giant pumpkin, nominated the Newstead Echo to receive the proceeds of the competition and he had this to say, "I get so much enjoyment reading the Echo every month
and I think the Echo is forgotten as far as handouts go and they deserve it."
